The List of 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards Nominees........ Nigerians Score The Highest Nominations

MTV Networks Africa and Zain have announced the list of nominees for the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (MAMA).  The nominees were announced on the 30th of October, 2010 at a star-studded celebration at De Marquee, Lagos, Nigeria. The event was attended by artists, the nominees and celebrities including 2Face Idibia, Sasha and Mo Cheddah.
The nominations were revealed by Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, Andre Beyers, Chief Marketing Officer, Airtel Group and Rajan Swaroop, CEO, Zain Nigeria.
Nigerian artists led the rest of the continent, scoring an impressive
13 nominations in total. Pop duo  P-Square had 3 nominations (Artist of the Year, Best Group and Best Video), and there two nominations apiece for MAMA 2009 winner 2Face Idibia (Best Male, Artist of the Year), and R&B starlets Wande Coal (Best Anglophone, Best Male) and Banky W (Song of the Year, Best Video). The Kokomaster - D’banj, a four-time MAMA winner, received yet another MAMA nomination for Song of the Year for his smash Fall in Love. Nigerian female artists also rated well with Best Female nods for Nneka and Sasha, while Mo Cheddah bagged a nomination for Brand:New artiste of the year.
Speaking during the same occasion, Rajan Swaroop, Zain Nigeria CEO, commended Nigerian artistes for their showing at the nominations stage of the awards. According to him, ‘the fact that Nigerian artists have scooped many nominations is a proof that investment in the industry is paying off. We hope this will translate to more awards for Nigerian artistes during the main show.’
Far from an all-Nigerian affair, this year’s MAMA gives greater recognition to artistes from non-English speaking Africa than any other previous editions.  According to Alex Okosi, ‘this year’s MAMA is even more representative of the growth of the pan-African music scene and the added emphasis on Lusophone and Francophone artists makes this the most exciting MAMA nominations race that we have seen so far.’
The nominees for the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain were shortlisted by the MAMA Academy – a handpicked group of music industry experts from across the African continent.  The winners for the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards will be revealed on Saturday 11 December 2010 at the Eko Expo Centre, Lagos, Nigeria.

Actress ANNIE MACAULAY Speaks On TUFACE & The Other Babymamas

Innocent Idiba is one of the biggest musicians in africa today,no doubt, and his recent live show which pulled successful people from all works of live is still the talk of town.
Recently whispers filtered in that two of his babymamas annie and pero involved themselves in a fight of the decade after the show Since annie is now in a familiar terrain(nollywood)some of her colleagues pleaded that the story was false as they were at the venue and even still there when annie went away.
The only natural thing was contacting annie as other party mentioned in the altercation had returned to her American base..
It was a question and answer session.first annie screamed ''i cant believe stella is calling me,what did i do right this time?you always went to press without hearing my side.God be praised, stella called me!''
After preaching the gospel of the 'two sides of a coin to her,the session began.
Annie---:I really dont want to talk about innocent like that anymore in the papers, sorry but i will pass this question.
Stella---:Okay so what is your relationship like with the other baby mamas sunmbo and
 Pro and whoever else?
Annie---:I hardly ever see any of them. Their kids are related to my daughter so i really dont have any problem with them, Iwould love my daughter to have a good relationship with her older siblings. I have no problem with them
and when i see sunmbo i say hello
to her, we are cool like that.

  Stella---:And when you see pero?
Annie---:I hardly ever see that one but i dont have any problem with her, if she has with me, I dont know about it.
Stella---:So you have metamorphosed into an actress? is that a stunt or for real?
Annie---:Well its not an overnight thing, over the years i have been trying to break through but right now, the light is shining for me and i am trying to focus on my acting career and other things i am doing on the side as well.from now on,i want to focus on what i do,all these rumours are distractions and i will ignore them, the only thing that hurts is that my little girl was mentioned in the write up,something that was supposed to be a beautiful event between a little girl and her daddy is now being turned around negatively,to be little something so beautiful it hurts.i am not even going to give the story going round a second thought because I know it didnt happen. Tonto dike and sound sultan were actually there and people can verify from them that nothing happened. its amazing how people just make up stories. how can they say Innocent used my daughter because she was the only one available to be used and not because he really wanted to, Innocent is not like that,he loves his children equally.
All innocents kids are related and i dont want anyone bringing bad blood between them because its not necessary .Innocent is really trying his best to unite his children.
Stella---:Any plans on making more babies with innocent?
Annie:---I dont plan on making more babies with him on anyone else anytime soon and thats the truth.
Stella---:Thank you for taking out time to answer the questions.
Annie---:Thank you for calling this time Stella. you have written a lot of things about me that i wished you had called to ask me first but thank you for this new move, i hope you will call next time before you write,it makes things easier and it helps not misinform people.
Whoever went to town with this false rumour God bless them. Thank you Stella.

Khloe Kardashians Opens up on low Self Esteem Issues

In a new interview with Life & Style Magazine this week, the statuesque star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, said she was called
‘fat’ and ‘ugly’ throughout school and it was the love of her sisters that saved her.
She says: ‘Having someone in your class call you fat, ugly, too tall and so on, you start to think all those things about yourself. And if you’re like me, those words are played on repeat inside your head.’ Khloe says it was her family that saved her from despair during the most difficult period of her life.
Her petite and super-slim sisters Kim and Kourtney were the very people who saved her from feeling terrible. ‘When I was at home, I felt loved and safe. My sisters were always a safe haven for me. I knew they would always play with me and make me feel like I was one of them,’.

I Am Not Prepared For Love Now....... Uti Nwachukwu

The winner of Big Brother All Stars, Uti Nwachukwu returned to the country last week to a grand reception organised by M-net Nigeria.
HVP caught up with him as he recounts his thrilling experience, while in the house, his aspirations as well as love life.
Hear him….
Welcome back to the country. How did you feel emerging winner of BBA All Stars reality show?
For me, it wasn’t all about the money, but it was about making my country and every other person that supported me proud. I can’t really capture the way I felt in words. I was overjoyed, my head was in the cloud and it was amazing.
How would you describe your experience in the house?
It was amazing, I had fun. The experience was memorable.
While watching the grand finale, your countenance showed that you were not expecting to win the prize?

I’m a positive thinker. In my heart of hearts, I was convinced I was going to win the show.
But I expressed shock that God actually answered my prayer; that God was actually listening to me. I was wondering what manner of God is this, that proved Himself faithful.
It was a moment of spiritual affinity with my God; that my faith in Him was not in vain after all. That was what you read in my face.
Does it mean you were looking forward to bringing the prize money back to Nigeria?
Yes, I was determined to win the contest. Of course, everybody thought because Nigeria won the contest last year, the country would not win again in this year’s edition.
How come you did not go into a relationship in the house?
It was because I’m a disciplined young man. I was there for a reason and not the contrary.
I was in the house to entertain Africans and also to showcase the best side of me to the world, and never to derail. Entering into a relationship would cause me to loose focus and I was not prepared to make that mistake.
When you heard of your Dad’s demise, you were in a very low spirit. How were you able to cope with the sad news given the challenges ahead of you?
It was just God that sustained me. Like I said earlier, I put everything in God’s hands. I remembered that it was the last thing I told my Dad, I was going to do before I left for South Africa.
That made me to feel stronger and the fact that my Mom was watching me on Dstv, I didn’t want her to feel that while she was mourning back in Nigeria, her son was also mourning in the house. That how she saw cope on screen, would also help her to cope with the situation too.
Who are you going to miss among your fellow housemates?
I’m going to miss Sheila, Mwisho, Hannington, Lerato and Meryl . In fact, I’m going to miss all the housemates. Yes, while in the house, I missed my family and my friends back in Nigeria.
And you were in the house in 2008, where you happened to be the third housemate evicted. How did it happen?
I have no idea. People said it was because of the glass house incident and many other insinuations But here I am today. I was never discouraged because I knew I possess some potentials in me.
You said, you didn’t go into any relationship while you were in the house, how come you were emotionally attached to the Kenyan representative Sheila?
Sheila is my good friend, and nothing more than that.
Would you agree to the fact that being in the house affected your lifestyle?
Yes, it made me a better person. It also helped me to work with people from different cultural backgrounds; it opened my eyes in several ways. I discovered myself and learn to let everything go, while in the show. I put my trust in God and He proved me right.
So, being in the house really affected my life in so many positive ways.
Now that the show has come and gone, what are you planning to do next? How do you intend to spend the prize money?
I’m going back to work; to the television and music. As for how I intend to spend the money, I’m yet to give it a thought. But when I’m through with my family problem, I should be able to ascertain what to do with the money. But at the moment, I’m planning to channel part of the money into a prostrate cancer awareness campaign. Hopefully, I will be able to get sponsors.
You started off as a banker, and also you read Computer Science under Education. Why did you walk out of the banking hall for showbiz?
I did my one year industrial training in the bank. While the duration expired, I went back to school to complete my academic programme. Though I’d made up my mind to go into the entertainment business after graduation. I’m not an office person per se. I like travelling and mingling with other people.
It’s not surprising that you have been clamouring to hit the top, having featured once in the Next Movie Star?
I think I was born to be an entertainer. Entertaining people is the only thing I see myself doing in life. I just want to make my mark in the industry so that I can begin to earn good money as an entertainer.
You are handsome and promising, and with a lot of money at your disposal, how are you going to contend with some of your female fans, especially those of them with hidden motives?
The same way I tried to cope, while I was in the house. God is my strength. I don’t have to be sleeping around. I’m going to be honest with people that will come my way. But as for falling in love, I don’t think I’m prepared for it now.
You are in any relationship at the moment?
Not really.
Meaning there is no woman in your life?
Yes, for now, there is no woman in my life. I was in a relationship that ended in November last year. I’m not in a hurry to start off another relationship.
What led to the break up?
I had an issue with her that we couldn’t resolve. That was it.
And you are not thinking of going into a new relationship?
Not so soon.

Explosives Found On US Bound Plane Headed For Synagogue

President Barack Obama declared Friday that authorities had uncovered a "credible terrorist threat" against the United States following the overseas discovery of U.S.-bound packages containing explosives aboard cargo jets. Obama said
both had been addressed to Jewish organizations in the Chicago area.
The disclosures triggered a worldwide alert amid fears that al-Qaida was attempting to carry out fresh terror attacks
The events "underscore the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism," the president said. The packages both originated in Yemen, but Obama did not explicitly assign blame to al-Qaida, which is active in the Arab nation and long has made clear its goal of attacking the United States.
The events unfolded four days before national elections in which discussion of terrorism has played almost no role.
Obama stepped to the podium in the hours after officials disclosed that authorities in Dubai intercepted an explosive device bound for a Chicago-area Jewish institution. The second package was aboard a plane searched in England, and officials said it contained a printer toner cartridge with wires and powder.

Cinderella And The Fairygod Mother.........The Wedding Planner

Lilian Isah Chinke
Oh my!!! I do not have enough time to plan my dream wedding. I am confused as to what ideas will work.
I most definitely need the help of my fairy godmother to advice me and help put my wedding together. In comes the WEDDING PLANNER.
A wedding planner is a professional whose task it is to help organize a wedding. The planner can organize everything from the choice of Aso-ebi, organization of the engagement party to booking key vendors. When dealing with the wedding planner, there are certain things you should know on your ride to your ball.
Draw out a BUDGET before your first meeting with your planner. This is important when discussing your ideas and expectations with your planner. It is also very useful when planning your wedding because it will help when you want to cut down on your expenses. If you find it difficult drawing out your budget, no sweat. A good wedding planner should be able to draw out a budget for you.-

Decoration by Event Masters

Do not assume that your planner will do everything. SPECIFY exactly what you expect your planner to do as some planners will not want to do certain things like running your dry-cleaning errands..
Cut your planner some slack .Allow her/him some level of CONTROL. Giving total control might be difficult because, this is an important aspect of your life, but you should trust her professional
advice and allow her do her job without overriding all her decisions .Even though you can not give her or him 100% control, trust your planner to make the best decisions on some aspect of the wedding preparation.
It is okay to have mind blowing out of this world ideas, after all you are Cinderella and it is your ball but, discuss these ideas with your planner. If you have a theme tell your planner, seek his or her opinion and if you both have conflicting opinions on some ideas, try to reach a truce but, try as much as possible to separate FANTASY from REALITY. Some ideas will work and some will not be executed successfully. When your planner tells you that combining some colours for your hall decoration will not come out well, trust his or her judgment on that one. When I see some halls I am amazed at the COLOUR RIOT on display. For some adventurous brides, they have dreamt of having ice sculptures at their wedding reception, but no matter how powerful the air-conditioning system around the sculpture is, it will melt under Nigerian temperature, and leave a mess.
Assign someone to liaise with your planner. Just incase you are not around to check certain things, there should be someone to hold forth for you. The person should be a trusted friend or relative, who should be there right from the first meeting.
It is okay to be anxious and expect everything to be PERFECT, but try to calm down and relax because when you are stressed you will put enormous pressure on your planner .Try as much as possible to have a cordial relationship with your planner at all times. This works and will be beneficial to both of you on the long run.
Above all commit the wedding preparations and the wedding itself to GOD. As you enter a new chapter in your life, you need his guidance all the way.

Na Wah Ohh!!! Woman gives birth to snake

It sure sounds unbelievable, but a young woman has been delivered of a snake in Umuahia. The woman delivered the scary reptile
on Wednesday following hours of intense prayers at the Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, along Eze Ogbulafor Street, Umuahia, Abia State.
Chairman of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) in Abia state, Apostle Emmanuel Agomoh, who is also the head of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim in the state said a priest, Apostle Uche Ugwu had engaged himself in hours of prayers to cause the delivery of  the snake from the private part of the 35-year-old lady whose names are being withheld.
The snake, said to have been programmed into the woman’s womb since her secondary school days, was headless and tailless.
The incident, which has become the talk of the town, happened around 5p.m. on Wednesday at the church premises.
Daily Sun learnt that the young lady hails from Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA.
She was said to have delivered the snake like a woman under labour following prayers by the priest that everything that was not of God in her should come out of her body. The incident attracted a large crowd.
Apostle Agomoh said the snake forced itself out of the woman’s private part with the intention of attacking Apostle Ugwu. The cleric’s younger brother, however, was able to kill the animal.
The cleric said the woman came to the church on Monday for prayers following the pains she had been experiencing  all over her body since she was in secondary school. According to him, it was at this juncture  that one of the prayer warriors in the church Apostle Ugwu conducted the prayers that forced the snake out of her body.
“As I was praying and calling on whatever was inside the lady to come out, the lady was writhing in pains. The snake even wanted to attack me until my brother here killed it with the stick,” Ugwu told our reporter.
He said such miracles happen very  often in the church. “But we don’t advertise  it and we don’t use any fetish things here. We only engage in prayers,” he said.
Daily Sun learnt that the lady, who is still  in shock is currently recuperating in her village.

Na Wah Ohh!!! Woman Stabbed 30 Times

A Bronx man accused of fatally stabbing a teen girl he suspected was sleeping with his 25-year-old girlfriend told cops the woman helped him do in the victim.
Jose Mendez, 40, told cops that Rosanna Castro grabbed 17-year-old Luzbenet Ramirez as he held her by the neck and stabbed the teen 30 times in a jealous rage.
Mendez, who suspected Castro and Ramirez of sleeping together, thought killing the teen "would solve their relationship issues," a source said.
"She told me to get two garbage bags and we could put her on the roof and no one would find her," Mendez said, according to prosecutors. "She said she wanted to start again working on our relationship."
Instead, Mendez wrapped Ramirez's body in plastic and stowed it in the closet of Castro's Southern Blvd. home in the Woodstock section.

D'banj Clashes With Clarence Peters

`
Daggers are drawn between D'banj and prolific music video director, Clarence Peters. This is as a result of a misunderstanding they had concerning the direction of the video of D'Banj's song - Scape Goat

The story has it that Dbanj had approached Clarence to direct the video and the latter had provided the budget for it to D'Banj personal manager. According to the director, he presented a unique and costly concept which would have cost around N5million. But seeing that it was on the high side, he had proposed a partnership between his Capital Hills outfit and Mo'Hits which would halve the cost. D'Banj and his people felt offended by the price and waited for their next meeting with the director.
The meeting took place on Monday Oct 18th at the shoot of the MTV Independence anniversary. According to Clarence, D'banj said that he (Clarence) was calling him a 'maga' and trying to swindle him by presenting such a budget. "D'Banj and Bankuli, his personal manager called me all sorts of names and walked out of the shoot." Clarence said
"They talked to us rudely and we even had to restrain some of our crew from attacking them" rapper Illbliss who works with Clarence said.
D'Banj's camp refused to respond to the matter.

Drake Sued by Playboy

Drake is being sued by Playboy Enterprises for sampling a track on his hit single “Best I Ever Had”. According to media reports, the lawsuit lists Drake, Cash Money Records and Universal Music Group as being sued on Copy Infringement.
Supposedly, the song sampled at the beginning of
“Best I Ever Had” is allegedly the same thing as the song “Fallin’ In Love,” by Hamilton, Joe Frank andDennison/Reynolds. The copyright for the music belongs to Playboy Music, Inc. and Plaintiff, Playboy Enterprises, is its successor in interest.
“Each Defendant either knew, or should have reasonably known, that the sound recording ['Fallin' in Love'] was protected by copyright. Each Defendant continues to infringe upon Plaintiff’s right in and to the copyrighted sound recording ,” court documents read.
Playboy Enterprises wants an injunction that would halt the sale and distribution of the song, which would effectively take Drake’s So Far Gone EP off the market, or at least cause the label to re-release it without the song.

Na Wah Ohh!!! Wife kills husband over loaf of bread

If tears could raise the dead, Hafeez Rasheed, allegedly stabbed to death by his wife, Molayo, would have ‘resurrected’ by now. But wishes were not horses, as her weeping and wailing could not repair the irreparable damage, done to the family by his alleged murder. But the woman in the eyes of the storm tried to justify her action.

“After stabbing him, I cried out for help, but our neighbours did not come to assist in saving his life. I cried for help but

nobody came to assist me,” she lamented. The incident occurred at Ile Oloola Oja Igbo area of Ibadan, Oyo State. Problem started when Molayo was eating a loaf of bread and her husband decided to take part of it without her permission.

The 18-year-old woman was said to have challenged her husband for eating out of it. The suspect, a bread hawker, was alleged to have earlier quarreled with the victim, after he reportedly refused to give her N1,000, feeding allowance.

According to her, what her late husband could afford to give her was N70. She also narrated how they started fighting as a result of his failure to give her the money she requested.
“I was frustrated as he could only afford to give me N70, instead of the N1,000. We started exchanging words and he suddenly held my back. As I tried to lose myself from his grip, he started beating me up. Fight later broke out and it was in the process that I used the knife to stab him in the chest and he died at about 2.00 pm.

I didn’t know it would result in his death. I still blame our neighbours for not coming to his rescue,” she said amid tears. According to some neighbours, before the tragedy, the couple turned their matrimonial home to battle field.
The suspect also confirmed this: “We fought regularly and after each quarrel, which sometimes made me to go back to my parents’ house, my husband usually came to beg me to come back,” she said.

“I got married to my husband in 2007 and the marriage is blessed with a year old child. But my husband was not taking care of me and our child. He usually beat me up each time I requested money for the up-keep of the family,” Molayo said. One of the victim’s relatives said the family was still in shock over the tragedy. He disclosed that Rasheed was the only son of his parents.

“They always quarreled, but we didn’t know this could result in his death,” he said. He recalled how the suspect was sent packing on many occasions, but her late husband went and brought her back to the family. “Let Molayo face the consequences of her dastardly act,” he said.

Blazin Hot Video: P'square .... Gimme Dat

Nigerian music superstars P'square are out with a new joint.Watch the video after the jump and check out pictures of their new mansion

The house reportedly cost over 300million Naira. Here is what Peter Had to say about the actual cost of the Mansion

"Getting a land in Omole Estate (Ikeja, Lagos) alone is N100m. When you look at the house, especially the finishing, it is over $2million. When people speculated that the house was worth N300 million, we had not even finished the interior. What do you think is the cost of a mansion that has a swimming pool, six living rooms, ten master bedrooms, all fully furnished? It's far more than the speculated N300million"

Ghanian Actor John Dumelo Has Been Arrested In Nigeria

The squabble between the Ghanaian movie industry and that of Nigeria is getting nastier by the day. The latest casualty to fall victim to the rift between Ghallywood and Nollywood is Ghanaian Actor John Dumelo who was allegedly arrested in Nigeria a few days ago.
Information available to us indicates that John was apprehended on set in Nigeria whiles shooting a new movie for a female Nigerian producer. The sources disclosed that the actor was arrested for

refusing to pay an amount Ghanaian actors and producer are supposed to pay before they are permitted to act in any movie. John Dumelo confirmed the incident in and exclusive interview with peacefmonline and explained that there was an attempt to arrest him but he was not really arrested.
“Yes they nearly arrested me, it wasn’t an arrest as a matter of fact but I was nearly arrested.” Asked what the reason for his attempted arrest was, John said “It is because of this Ghana-Nigeria thing that we are supposed to pay something before we are allowed to shoot in Ghana or in Nigeria”. He further explained that he went to Nigeria to shoot a movie a few days ago and while he was on set, some members of the producers association in Nigeria came with the police to arrest him for shooting in Nigeria illegally.
According to John, they claim that the producer who brought him to Nigeria did not pay some association for bringing a Ghanaian there. “It was one of the associations which brought in the police. The police didn’t come there on their own, but eventually I wasn’t arrested. I was nearly taken to the police station for whatever reason I don’t know”.
Asked how he was able to prevent the police from arresting him he said “Obviously I have a Nigerian working permit and everything so I showed them my working permit and told them to sort thing out with the producer because it is the producer who has to pay them.
“For me I don’t have to pay anybody any money, because it was the producer who brought me there. So if there is any problem it is the producer they should talk to”. On how he was able to leave the country without been harmed or manhandled John said “Oh! I managed to finish filming the next day and then I left”. However the president of the Actor Guild of Nigeria Segun Arinze has also confirmed the incident saying John was not arrested but he was stopped from working in Nigeria without permit. Speaking on Peace FM’s “Entertainment Review” program he said even though he was not in town when the incident occurred he was told on his return that John was not arrested. “Nobody arrested John Dumelo to the best of my knowledge I know he was stopped from working but he wasn’t arrested. That will be a bit of an exaggeration”.
Segun said there is no problem at all and that everything is under control. He also added that three days after the incident, The Actor Guild of Nigeria and producers had a meeting with the Ghana Actors Guild and the Ghanaian producers to solve the problem. “We are brothers and we will forever remain brothers. I don’t see anybody been arrested. It is a free enterprise; we just need to sort a few things out”. According to Mr. Arinze plans are far advanced for both parties to have a final decisive meeting either in Lagos or in Accra.
Segun used the opportunity to apologize to Ghallywood actor John Dumelo. “To John Dumelo I will say we are deeply sorry for what happened. He was embarrassed we are sorry about it, and believe me, we will work it out there is nothing to worry about”.
When “Entertainment Review” host Kwasi Aboagye asked Segun why Ghanaians and Nigerians are demanding some payment before they are allowed to act or shoot in their respective countries, he answered “Nobody has asked anybody to pay anything. I think there has been confusion in the system, some people are doing this to profit and be mischievous about it, and we will defiantly get them and flush them out. We are all one; I go to Ghana to do movies and Ghanaians come to Nigeria to work. I don’t see why we should be losing sleep over this I think it is something we can definitely sort out”.
This whole Ghana-Nigeria rift started when Ghanaians reportedly demanded $1,000 from Nigerians and Nigerians also threatened to demand $2,000 from Ghanaians. This has resulted in some gruesome exchanges between Ghana and their Nigerian counterparts. Earlier on in the year, actors Van Vicker, Majid Michel and others also faced similar situation in Nigeria and they had to return to Ghana for their own safety.
John Dumelo’s incident seems to be a retaliation to the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) who seized the camera of a Nigerian crew who were allegedly shooting in Ghana with the express permission few months ago. The crew, who were shooting on the Spintex Road in Accra, refused to identify who the producer was, when the FIPAG members confronted them with the police. They then decided to confiscate their camera until the producer owned up.

Femi Kuti .............. ‘I Don’t Believe In Marriage,I will not leave my house to vote for Dele Momodu'

As Americans are still basking in the euphoria of the Broadway musical (Fela!), that chronicles the life and times of the Afro beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti; his true friends – the common man on the street, the oppressed and cheated troop in and out of the New Afrika Shrine on a daily basis to celebrate another posthumous birthday of the man whose musical sermons and activism were about giving hope to the common Nigerian.
It’s a Thursday evening at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos. Afro beat followers are gathering in their twos and threes. They are walking up and about like surveyors – lighting fresh cigarette sticks at quick intervals, while marijuana smoke is up in the air like an inferno scene is close by. They are all gearing up for the evening’s activities. Backstage is a staircase that leads to Femi Kuti’s sanctuary. We step further without fear, peeping at different pictures hanging on the walls – the World Music Award winner and two-time Grammy nominee poses with different great men and women in the portraits.
Cutting on Femi, he is in his chair, engrossed in a book while his saxophone sits comfortably on his laps. He doesn’t even notice the presence of a third party until a little later. ‘Somebody just gave me this book of my grandfather – it’s very interesting’ he says later.
Upon hitting ‘REC’ on the recorder, Mr Kuti opens up on the sorry state of Nigeria that Fela fought against; how it has degenerated, naming names and apportioning blames. He talks about his religious belief, his failed marriage and his women…
You fought the producers of FELA! (The Broadway Musical) to bring the show to Nigeria. Was it your battle with them that mandated them to bring it to Lagos?
I don’t want to pat myself on the back but we fought tirelessly to make them bring it to Lagos and I don’t want to say it wasn’t at the back of their mind initially. When I was invited I told them if it’s not brought to Lagos I won’t attend. I didn’t want to attend not

because I thought it was not good, but I don’t think being on the Broadway will be their greatest achievement or impact and I believe the best place to host it is the new African Shrine. Why should the Broadway be better than the Agidingbi Street? Why should it be Broadway and not Ikeja. So as a patriotic citizen, I fought for it to be brought here and make African Shrine the greatest place on this planet and that’s my dream and my goal – to make the New African Shrine the most precious place.
Why do you think the producers were not considering bringing it here until you stepped in?
Money! You know it’s going to cost them a whole lot of money to bring that kind of show to Lagos. They have sponsors for taking it to England. They’ll need a multinational to back them because they’ll need to bring down the whole cast and the production crew down to Lagos. It’s not a money venture, the show is for free, and they’ll need to pay the cast and the production crew. The shrine cannot afford to invest in that now. It’s their duty to go look for who is going to sponsor it. Though, it’s going to take it a while here probably one year, I know it’s going to England in November. I hope it goes to Tokyo and all over the world. I think it’s a play everybody should watch but what I’m fighting for is to bring it to Lagos.
Before now, news was all over the place that Dbanj was auditioned for the show and all of a sudden we heard that he has been dropped, would you prefer him to play the Fela character?
I never knew him as an actor, but I don’t care who plays the role as long as the person plays the role properly. If the person doesn’t play it well, I won’t be hypocritical about it. I’m not for or against Dbanj playing the role. So if somebody gets the role over him, probably that person must be a proper actor. The guy that plays the role now plays it properly. You can’t be Fela, you can only act him. The show I watched in New York was an excellent show.
Critics say Fela’s Children are not taking care of his home; meanwhile other world Legends like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Bob Marley’s homes have become tourist centres. Would it be true to say Fela’s children are just milking his name?
(Pauses) Critics say we don’t take care of Fela’s house? Its pepper body that is worrying them. Do they know the problem inside the Kuti family? Do you want me to start saying the problem of the family? How can you lambast what you don’t know? Just like a teaser, when somebody like me was criticizing my younger brother – Seun, they said I was envious. In fact, I could not even say anything; he’s the one living in this house. Should I go and beat them to clean the house? When I said that this is how the house should go, it was these same critics that said why am I interfering in the house? They can see the New African shrine, this place cost us over 100 million naira. Where did we get the money? My mother, my sister and I decided to use our money to build the New African Shrine. We could have bought cars; we could have travelled to Europe. My mother wanted to move out of this country, she would have done that. Do you find that the shrine does not look kept? Because Seun and others are minors, they have no control. So my sister had to battle some of them out of the place, including people criticizing me in the first place. So they can say what they like, these kinds of people are spoiling Nigeria. This shrine and felabration has been run free for ten years now. We’ve run at complete loss to keep Fela’s name, ideas, heritage and family principles alive and many people can testify to that.
One would expect the multinational companies and the rest to support Felabration. What’s wrong?
That’s what you should be saying; when monkeys are talking like baboons. They should be thinking why Fela’s name has not been preserved by the government. Why are the multinationals not supporting Fela that is on Broadway? Fela has become a house hold name in France; in England…oyinbos are asking how could a man compose this kind of song? That he’s a genius and all that. Now, when you get to our people, they start to talk about fetish things that are not significant to the development of a nation. Where is MTN, Glo, Zain? We have gone to all these people to support Felabration, they’ve all refused because they want to be ‘pally pally’ with the government.  And Fela is still anti-government; they cannot afford not to let the government renew their licenses because they are all government boys. With their coat and tie, with their black skin, they think they are white men. My sister had to be diplomatic but I can never be diplomatic because I will always speak my mind. Whether they support or not, Nigeria will still celebrate the life and times of Fela. Shina Peters, King Sunny Ade, Lagbaja, Weird MC, Dbanj, Nneka…they’ve all been here and they are still on the Felabration 2010 bill. Nigerian artistes are all trying because they all came here to perform free of charge. The shrine can’t afford to pay them. What they should have done is to make him a great man; but Fela has been a great man and will always be a great man. Whether they like it or not, most of them are still dancing to his tunes. If you look at the president’s history, didn’t he dance to his Fela’s music in his youth days? What of Obasanjo? Didn’t he dance or shake his head to his music at one time or the other. So, Fela’s fans will forever come to the African shrine to pay homage to the great man.

Are you saying the musicians campaigning for these policians for the 2011 poll are fools?
I’ll probably say that they are naive and don’t know history. If you call me to campaign for any politician, I will refuse. Now, which politician has challenged Obasanjo or Babangida or brought any government functionaries to book? Are they telling us all the past leaders were not corrupt? That we just arrived at this predicament by accident? If the bankers are so corrupt can you imagine how some of our politicians can be corrupt? Are they saying none of the past and present governors are corrupt enough to be in jail by this time? Why is it taking them so long to prosecute them? Why do they even give them bail? Who is going to answer all these and if nobody is ready to answer, so why do they jail the housemaid for stealing a thousand naira? Why do you accuse the Okada rider and execute a common man for committing an offence? When the big criminals go away with our millions? So if they call me to campaign for any politician, that person should have been a leader that would have put all this in check and I’ll be ready to die for his ideas. Like Kwame Nkrumah, Lumumba and Fela. I haven’t seen any of our leaders and if we go further, Obasanjo is President Goodluck’s godfather. From what we hear, he’s a PDP member; Is Goodluck is going to jail any PDP representative? I can’t believe that? It’s yet to be seen. May be when I see that, I’ll say Nigeria is changing for the better. You want to tell me Obasanjo’s eight-year failed tenure is not answerable to anyone? What happened to all the money budgeted to electricity in this country? We still don’t have electricity, who is going to pay the cost of all the money? Who is going to pay the cost of most of us that are born in the sixties and haven’t enjoyed in our country? Our lives have been wasted! So you cannot find me campaigning for any leader that cannot answer to the history of our nation.
One on One with IBB, what will you tell him?
It can never happen. I don’t even give it a thought. Where are we going to meet? He can never come the African Shrine and I can never go to his house in Minna. I don’t socialize stupidly, so we can never meet at any party that he’ll be there too. So, where are we going to jam? He’s part and parcel of the down fall of this country.
Come 2011, who will you vote for?
With all what I have said, you’re still asking me who will I vote for? Do you believe I can vote for the calibre of people we have playing politics today?
Not even Dele Momodu?
Dele Momodu hasn’t stepped on my toes but I wouldn’t vote for him. Do you believe he’s credible enough to be president of this country? If you look at Dele Momodu’s history, if I look at it tentatively, I will not even leave my house to vote for him. Why would you want to go and delve there? It’s like a mission impossible, let us face fact. What of the election rigging, you’ll see how many contestants that will end up in the court over election malpractices. Many of the military men took off their uniform and also contested because they don’t want to leave power.
Let’s talk about your women. Do you have a lot of them like Fela?
I have girlfriends. I don’t believe in marriage. I got married once and I knew I was wrong
