UCHE JOMBO HONOURED IN ABIA STATE

On the December 17^th 2010, the Abia State Governor Chief Theodore Orji decided to honour the citizens that had brought a lot of pride to the state; It

was called the 1^st Abia State Honours & Award Night. Those on the roll were Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, J.Martins, Ruggedman, Nigga Raw, Kalu Nwankwo, Ejike Asiegbu, Nkiru Silvanus, Chinedu Ikediasi (Aki of Aki and Paw Paw), Bright Okpocha (Basket Mouth) to name a few.  The ceremony which was well attended, took place at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Abia State. It was quite commendable for the Governor to do this and it is hoped other Governors can follow suit; that is reward excellence in their state when they see it.  It seems the state was still not through with her; Uche was also honoured in her village with a chieftaincy title!  She was given the title of ‘Adanagnga I of Abriba’ which she said means ‘She that has brought pride to the girl-child’.

Study Shows That Marriage Is Bad For You

  People who stay single, or become single again by divorce, may be somewhat more physically fit than those in wedded bliss, a new study suggests. The research, which followed nearly 8,900 adults over several years, found that both men and women who got married during that time tended to experience a dip in
cardiovascular fitness, as measured by treadmill tests.
In contrast, men who got divorced during the study saw a modest increase in their fitness levels. The findings, reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology, do not prove that a change in marital status directly causes the change in fitness — for better or worse. Still, researchers say the results support the notion that once people are married and, presumably, off the dating market, they tend to let themselves go a bit. But if they remain single or get divorced, they have more incentive to get in shape. That’s not to say that there’s a huge fitness chasm between singles and married couples.
In this study, changes in marital status were related to only small changes in fitness, lead researcher Dr. Francisco B. Ortega, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, told Reuters Health in an e-mail. He stressed that any one person’s fitness levels depend on a complex mix of factors, including genetics, exercise habits, body composition and overall health. But if the newly wedded are aware that their physical fitness could wane, they might pay more attention to keeping up an exercise routine, according to Ortega and his colleagues.
The findings are based on 6,900 men and 1,971 women who were followed for just over three years at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas. They had physical exams, reported on their lifestyle habits and underwent treadmill tests to gauge their physical fitness. When it came to marital status, the researchers found, women who remained single during the study period showed a small increase in their fitness levels over time. That gain was not seen among women who got married. For their part, men who married showed a decline in fitness — but so did those who stayed single, though theirs was a smaller loss. For men, the differences were more apparent when the researchers looked at divorce and re-marriage. Men who got divorced during the study showed a gain in fitness levels, while those who remained married saw no change. Meanwhile, men who were divorced at the outset showed a general decline in fitness over time — but the drop was steepest among those who got re-married. There was no evidence of any divorce “benefit” among women. However, the researchers say one reason could be that there were far fewer women in the study than men, and only a small number of women changed their marital status during the follow-up period.
The researchers say the findings highlight the role of social factors in people’s fitness levels. “This study provides for the first time evidence that marital transitions are (an) important social stimulus that can influence fitness,” Ortega said. And that fits in with the general idea that major life transitions affect people’s health habits, noted Dr. Steven N. Blair, a professor at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, who also worked on the study. “Sometimes these effects are positive and sometimes negative,” Blair said in an email. “I think a message to the public is that they need to be aware of the possible effects of life transitions, and try to make plans to maintain a healthful lifestyle.”

Fuji King, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister Is Dead

Fuji music icon, Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister is dead. His death was confirmed to P.M.NEWS this afternoon by his son, Wale, popularly known as Barry Showkey.

Investigations revealed that

the musician popularly known as Alhaji Agba died this morning at St. Mary Hospital, London after a protracted illness.

P.M.NEWS gathered that Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister had been in and out of hospital in the past two years and was operated upon in an Indian hospital early in the year.

On his return from India, Barrister was again rushed to Havana Hospital, Surulere, Lagos and was later flown to the Universal Clinic, Germany. From there, the ‘Fuji Garbage’ crooner was admitted at St. Mary Hospital, London, where he died this morning.

One of Nigeria’s best known singer/songwriters, Chief Sikiru Ayinde Barrister played an essential role in the evolution of the music in his homeland. The leader of a 25-piece band, the Supreme Fuji commanders, and a smaller group, the Africa Musical International Ambassadors, Barrister continued to be one of the leading purveyors of fuji, an exciting, amplified dance music combining juju, apala, and a traditional Yoruba blues that he introduced in the late 70s.

Barrister sang most of his life. By the age of ten, he had mastered Were, a complex, Yoruba vocal style that was traditionally performed during the holy month of Ramadan. Although he briefly attended a Muslim school and later Yaba Higher School, now Yaba College of Technology, in 1961, financial difficulties prevented him from continuing. Leaving school, he found employment as a stenographer. During the civil war that swept through Nigeria between 1967 and 1970, he served in the army. Signed by the Nigerian-based Africa Songs, Ltd. label, Barrister recorded many ground-breaking singles during the 1970s and 1980s with his heartfelt vocals set to a rhythmic mix of talking drums, claves, bells, shekere, drum set and Hawaiian-style guitar. He laid the foundation of fuji which he named after Mt. Fuji, the Japanese mountain of love. The style has been described as “juju without the guitars” and a “percussion conversation.”
