People Fell In Love With The Real Me............Alicia Keys

Singer Alicia Keys is in the latest issue of W magazine. In the interview she talks about the struggles she faced growing up, how she followed her own inspiration instead of listening to others when she was working on her debut album.......

We grew up in the city, had a hard edge and obstacles to overcome, but we were still young and beautiful. I didn’t want to

be all dressed up, all made up—I wanted to be myself, which hadn’t been done before.”

. “How terrible would it have been if I had come out with some watered-down version of who I am?” she says. “People fell in love with the real me, and I still feel blessed that that was how the journey began.”

To commemorate Songs in A Minor’s 10th anniversary, Keys has assembled a deluxe edition featuring early demos, alternate takes, and live recordings from the era, including a classical medley and a sultry cover of “Light My Fire.” The package documents the five-year life of this landmark project, which covered most of the singer’s adolescence.

Keys—recently married to producer Swizz Beatz and, as of October, mother to a son, Egypt—recalls the struggle it took to capture the sound in her head and the frustration she felt at being pushed, over and over, toward a more conventional style. “I was a young girl with very strong ideas but no experience,” she says. “I just knew that everything else I was doing was wrong—that all the suggestions weren’t what was in my mind, they weren’t what it was meant to be.”

Ultimately, it took the almost unprecedented step of allowing her to produce her own music for the streetwise elegance of Songs in A Minor to emerge. (Still one of the few female producers in the business, Keys has since helmed sessions for the likes of Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson.) As difficult as the delays and setbacks were, Keys maintains that it was all worth it to make the music of which she dreamed.

Struggling To Break Into The Music Biz? elDee Da Don Shows How To

I have seen so many people try to break into nigeria's competitive music business without success but nothing hurts more than seeing real talent rot away. Well one of naija's most talented rappers elDee da Don is about to school you on how to take your music to the next level.....................................
Upcoming naija talent, stop waiting for a messiah to help your career, get up, get out and promote yourself. You have all the tools you need. U have direct access to your likely fan-base.
Prepare, create and promote. Your success lies in

more after the jump
your ability to plan and achieve. People keep talking about money being an issue. It costs NOTHING to put music on facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation etc. What else do u need 4 promo?
As a people we have this sad belief that people owe it to us to help us. In reality, nobody owes u shit. Successful men dont have 2 brains. If everybody was out here looking for help, who would help you?
Everywhere I go its "eLDee pls help my career"..I feel ur pain but I also believe that attitude is the reason why ur career is dulling. You think its difficult to be an artist in Nigeria today? Ask tuface, Eedris, 2shots what they went through without these free tools. Now as a Nigerian artist you have DIRECT access to millions of people.
Find an interactive way to engage people & sell urself to them. Dont get caught up in the hype of Radio airplay as your ONLY means to promoting ur music, Radio is just a part of it.
Dont allow yourself to be exploited by people who ask for money to play ur music on radio, they're usually the ones that have no influence. Dont fall prey to those asking you to pay for "alaba-mix".
Alot of times people know ur song but they don't know u, weak promo strategy. The fact that u are getting heavy rotation on ONE radio station
doesnt mean uve done all d work.
Lagos alone has over 20 stations. Spread out!! Money 2 record & make
CDs is only an issue if u dont have a fund raising plan. Get a job, hustle, dont just sit there waiting for a miracle.Tuface didnt start off
rich, neither did DonJazzy, neither did
9ice. And I dont think anybody "helped" them become millionaires. #GrindItOut.
These are proven steps to getting your music out there in Naija. If you follow the next few tips, you're well on your way...
1. Record a good song, Sample opinions from a bunch of people (friends & strangers alike) and be sure at least 60% or more like the song.
2. Prepare urself as a
product. Work on your image and be
sure ure "attractive" to the average
person that comes across u or ur music.
3. Get ready to perform.
create performance routines, find an
exciting way to deliver ur song to any
audience that will leave an impression
4. Create an EPK
(Electronic press kit) which includes
good photos, a bio and ur music. Make
sure its of a size that can be sent as an
email
5. Once u are SURE ur
song is good to go, make as many copies
of ur CD as possible. I'd say at least
1,000 (Make sure ur CD art has ur info)
6. Create a myspace,
twitter, facebook fan page, reverbnation
and upload ur EPK to each of them
including your song, photos, bio etc.
7. Make a list of radio
stations within ur reach. I advice that u
start with regional promo. Its easier to
manage. Nationwide can come later
8. Make a list of the
nightclubs and places where music is
played publicly within your reach. Again,
regional promo is easier to manage.
9. Make a list of DJs and
Radio personalities within your reach.
10. Every entertainment
journalist that has a column in a
magazines or newspaper has an email
address. Make a list of all of them.
11. Get all this lists you
have compiled together and create a
realistic timeline of how long it will take
to contact everybody.
12. Create an email
address and in the signature section,
include all your twitter, fb, reverbnation
info and link to your song.
13. Send ur EPK to every
contact on your list that you can reach
via email and start booking appointments
for the ones u cant reach.
14. Get your CDs to all
the Radio DJs, club DJs, bars, Night
clubs, Radio stations, Radio personalities,
and everyone on your list.

15. Start your online
campaign, start building your fanbase by
sending your music to people. Do
everything in ur power for ppl to listen.
16. The goal is to get as
many fans as possible, do whatever it
takes to get people to listen to ur music.
If people like it, ure good to go
