Cross River state government has pledged it’s support to the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the delineation of Bakassi Area to enable it’s people participate in the ongoing voters registration exercise.
Governor Liyel Imoke who stated this while
receiving the INEC Zonal supervisor for Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, Mrs Thelma Iremiren during a courtesy call noted that though the exercise was yet to commence in the area, the state had informed INEC of the challenges faced by the people as it passed a law with the consent of the federal government following the handing over of the territory to Cameroon.
He described the situation as a difficult period for the people as 10 wards of the area were handed over to Cameroon while, Bakassi displaced persons were accommodated in Akpabuyo peacefully, explaining that the present location of Bakassi was acquired by government and the compensation was paid to the communities to forestall a future situation where the communities will say the land belongs to them.
Imoke disclosed that the state received no support whatsoever from the United Nations or any other international agency adding that during that period of resettlement, the state used the models in Calabar south local government and Calabar municipality to delineate wards in Bakassi to give the people a sense of belonging as well as enable them to vote in order not to disenfranchise the people.
